category:Outstanding Public Engagementtitle:Colorado National Monument 1st Edition Bike Jerseysubmitted by:Colorado National Monument Associationpartners:Colorado National Monument, National Park Service; Pearl Izumi; LOKI Mountain Wear and the Hot Tomatoyear:2017application:The new bike jersey is a must have for our many cycling enthusiasts in Western Colorado. Our cyclists are proud of their Colorado National Monument and are eager to display their pride as they ride all over the Nation as well as international destinations.
The jersey project has created strong partnerships with 3 local Colorado companies. The manufacturer, Pearl Izumi was incredibly enthusiastic about this project. They gave us a great deal on pricing and design work because in their words... (view more) "we love the Colorado National Monument". LOKI, a local outdoor sportswear company is very well respected in our community. I would imagine at least 85% of locals possess at least 2 LOKI garments. Not to mention that LOKI is sold all over the world. When people see the LOKI logo on our jersey they associate it with high quality, contemporary outdoor wear. The Hot Tomato, "THE" go to pizza place in the Grand Valley. Everybody knows the Hot Tomato, locals associate this business with excellent high quality food and good people. The last 2 sponsors not only offset the cost of production by paying CNMA to have their logos displayed, but our organization is now identified in the same light as two of the most successful, well respected companies in the area. Our sponsors are also easily identifiable as great supporters of public lands and the preservation of our natural environment.
The impact of the jersey has been great, we've sold nearly 100 so far. The retail price is high for a jersey, $99.00 with a 60% profit margin, so our 2 months of sales are excellent considering. Most customers realize they are supporting their park by purchasing the jersey. Our target audience are the thousands of avid cyclist who travel Rim Rock Drive annually. As I mentioned above, most riders purchase the jersey to wear on their cycling journeys around the globe. We've had several international visitors purchase them because they're eye catching and really cool!
CNMA has a very strong relationship with COLM and the NPS. Our park Superintendent actually had to approach the powers that be in Washington to obtain final approval for the sponsor logos to be included. It took about a month but the final determination was that the sponsors were "like minded" organizations with the best interests for public lands in mind. I think the fact our Superintendent and Chief of Interp were willing to spend their valuable time to make this happen is a testament to our strong partnership and common goals. The actual artwork used for the image was supplied by our Chief of Interp.
The development of strong and viable partnerships is truly evident with the production of this entry. Not only from the enthusiasm shown by the private sector but also the public. This project could not have been completed without the amazing support and encouragement of both. The project has created a great sense of camaraderie with both sectors not only now, but also many years down the line as this will be an on going project with a different image and jersey annually.
